Improve Oral Function
At Green Plaza Dental Centre, our Calgary dentists perform frenectomies for babies, children, and adults with impaired oral function.
What is a Frenectomy?
A frenum is a small fold of skin that attaches the tongue or cheek to the gums. A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that your dentist can perform quickly in-office to eliminate the frenum if it is restricting oral function, such as speaking or eating.
The lingual frenum is tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. If it stretches to the tip of the tongue, it can restrict tongue movement. It can also impair babies' ability to breastfeed. A lingual frenctomy corrects this problem.
The labial frenum connects the inside of the upper lip to the gums. If this frenum is too long or wide, causing the gums to be pulled away from the bone or creating a space between the two front teeth, a frenectomy can be performed to correct it.
